2025Anargyrios and Korgialenios School of Spetses, Athens State Orchestra, cond. Orestis Bilios

This work was written for the 2nd pilot laboratory of the Athens State Orchestra in 2025, mentored by Yannis Kyriakides. Epirus has a very rich polyphonic tradition, an imperfect and harsh kind of sound, used mostly for lamenting the dead. It also was the main – and most tragic – battleground of the civil war.

sun/stone [292-1348] begins with echoes of this choir, rebuilt through spectral reconstruction, which sets off a slow orchestral crescendo depicting the massacre on Makronisos in 1948. After that scene the music thins out almost to nothing, like the silence after a storm.

technical sideAfter spectral analysis and mathematical recomposition of the frequencies, the material of the tape came to be, first on paper and then played with imperfect (analog) oscillators. A disorienting element was added to the tape for the end of the piece: a third speaker that works like a resonator delay to the piano, put to the back right side of the orchestra so that it is spatially differentiated from the sound source.

2026Athens Technopolis, ΣΕΧΩΧΟ dance residency, with Pinelopi Mousga and Vasia Koutsilianou

Composed as part of a residency program by the Greek Dancers’ Union. Almost all sounds and samples are recorded in Technopolis Athens: old machinery, the dancers’ breathing, reverb of the rehearsal room etc.

It starts with a stretched-out, broody soundscape, combined with lyrical singing and a sample collage, then moves to a rather humorous, microtonal beat. This is the first part, premiered in September 2026; the project is ongoing.

technical sideTechnopolis is an old natural gas factory, filled to the brim with machinery that makes interesting sounds; these were captured as field recordings on a TASCAM DR-40 recorder. The rehearsal space had an interesting reverb, so all the voices were recorded there, on the same recorder. The goal was a project connected with the space, since the residency was held in part with Athens Technopolis.

2021–22“Alkmini” theatre
2022–23“Tzeni Karezi” theatre

Music composed for the production of the play, directed by Danai Katsameni, and played live on synths and piano. The work touches upon the grim theme of the Averof women’s prison in Athens after WWII and the civil war that followed. Its cells were filled with women fighters, soldiers, mothers and others who after the war were branded communists or sympathizers, and were left to rot or were executed.

technical sideThe play posed many problems to solve. Analog synths were used heavily (Behringer Model-D and Pro-1, Moog Subharmonicon, KOMA Elektronik Field Kit FX), and their programming had to be mapped; the score had to work with the theatre text as well as with the instrument changes; the aesthetic choices and the overall mood had to be set accordingly; and everything had to be set up in time. The production ran for two seasons, with great success.

2027Premiere in July, Greek National Opera

A new work, part of the Greek National Opera’s Music Theatre Workshop. Updates on its progress will appear here.

technical sideThe project opens up technical questions that are still being worked out. First thoughts on the technology include resonators, neural networks and live sound manipulation, but everything is still at an early research stage.
